This week the Heart Healers team is in Uganda for another medical mission. This time we’re partnering up with Imaging the World, working on bringing cardiac care to the rural Health Centre in Nawanyago.
Imaging the World: ITW saves lives by providing diagnostic imaging to patients in rural communities around the world.
We’re branching out this trip and focusing on pregnant women’s health care, by bringing a new research program to the Health Centre that focuses on Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in pregnant women. Known as a ‘silent killer’ in pregnancy, especially in rural Uganda, RHD worsens in severity in pregnancy, and contributes to maternal and fetal mortality.
We have high school students, medical residents and students, plus cardiologists all there in the trenches educating, learning, and practicing echocardiograms and the new RHD protocols.
How You Can Help:
A big part of what we’re doing here depends on telemedicine. The midwives perform echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds) and then send them to us here back in the States for a closer look. The additional load of echocardiograms coming through requires a couple of new servers to handle the workload and that doesn’t come cheap. But the benefit is priceless.
